January 2010 Brings Busy Travel Schedule

January 2010 Brings Busy Travel Schedule

I would just like to take a minute and wish all my clients the best in the upcoming year.

Thank you to all my clients for a wonderful 2009, I look forward to working with all of you again this year.

An International Effort on Imperial Sugar's Newsroom

An International Effort on Imperial Sugar’s Newsroom

_MG_8390lIt was a night to remember … Anticipation filled the control room situated above a tanker truck waiting to be loaded at Imperial Sugar Company’s Port Wentworth, Ga refinery.
_MG_8338l The room was packed with employees the evening of July 24, ready for a switch to be thrown that would begin filling trucks with granulated sugar, the first produced at the plant in more than 18 months.
I was there to document the historic moment in photos, and called upon to use a little of my rusty reporting skills becuase my two partners at The News Group Net were in Florida and Switzerland.IMG_845-846-1 - Ver#29122A6

At 10:25 p.m., loading operator Dwayne Frasier, surrounded by Elliot Gibbs and Marvin Knight, hit the start button that began loading the first truck. Two hours later, 48,000 lbs of sugar was successfully loaded, and  the truck cleared the _MG_8348l
refinery gates at 1:20 am.   The story needed to be posted ASAP, and due to the late hour,  my partner David Henderson stepped up to the plate from the mountains of Switzerland.   David mananged to write the story from my notes of the evening activities, while I did an edit on the photos.  The result  were story and photos were posted on the Imperial Sugar online newsroom (www.iscnewsroom.com) by the time people were starting to wake in the eastern U.S.

As a result of the quick posting, local and national media were able to pick up the story, and easily download photos of the event.  For a complete look at my work that evening visit the ISC Newsroom.

Shooting Editorial Work Keeps Corporate Work Exciting

Shooting Editorial Work Keeps Corporate Work Exciting

A number of years ago I photographed  the late world-renowned architect Fay Jones for People Magazine.  Jones, a friend and student of Frank Lloyd Wright, was best known for his unique open chapels built in the hills of Arkansas.

Editorial Assignment for Plus Publishing

While photographying Jones, he told me always to keep true to your roots. No matter how many commissions he had working, he always had a personal project in the works.American Profilel

I have tried to modify that approach to my work.

Being a product of journalism school, then newspapers and finally People Magazine, I have always had the editorial bug in my system. For those that have the same bug know, it is almost impossible to rid.

There are a few photographers that make the transition from editorial to corporate that refuse to take editorial assignments because they often pay next to nothing. For me, the thrill of capturing “the photo” and seeing it displayed in a national magazine or newspaper that actually help keeps a my corporate assignments exciting and fresh.

Applying an editorial approach to a corporate assignment is actually an approach to thinking through what a client is trying to show.

If my schedule is free, I am always open to an editorial shoot.

Something from Nothing

Something from Nothing

Something From NothingWe have all been there.  Whether as a writer, editor, graphic artist or photographer, we have all come across those boring little assignments that seem more of a waste of time than anything else. Making something interesting out of boring, for me, has always been a challenge that I love to face.

Recently I was hired by Anne Feltus of Houston to photograph a simple assignment for one of her clients, Key Energy Service.   The client had recently consolidated  the purchase of all work gloves to one supplier resulting in a very large cost savings.  I was given the task of shooting a photo to illustrate the article, the underlying trick was that the shot had to be pulled off  in a conference room.

The question came down to how to make six pairs of gloves, one white board and the subject into an interesting photo?key1
The answer came by enlisting four co-workers to fill the gloves. By using the co-workers hands to frame the subjects face, a blue gel on the boring white board and a great expression: a boring photo of a man and six pair of gloves becomes an interesting photo.

It is often tough to take the time to go the extra mile, but being creative continues to feed the muses that live in all great communicators.

New Photography Major Essential for Your Story

New Photography Major Essential for Your Story

New photography is always the key essential for corporate publications, marketing collateral and press releases. The use of stock handout photos shot with perfect lighting in situations that are unreal is not the current trend in effective photo marketing. Photos of real people using a companies product in real situations is the most effective way to communicate your company’s story to a buyer, your employees or news outlets.

BearCom, a Dallas, Tx based company, is a prime example of how to effectively use photography. BearCom is America’s only nationwide wireless equipment dealer and integrator; offering sales, rentals and service. They are also the world’s largest reseller of Motorola radio’s and a significant reseller of Sprint equipment, among others, and have clients worldwide.

Some recent assignments that have been shot of real people using wireless equipment on the job have been for security at a performance car show, the Heart Hospital of Austin and a major electronic retailer. Over the next few weeks I will update some of BearCom’s successful measures for photo usage.

You can see all the cool wireless toys at http://bearcom.com, and at http://wirelesswoman.com.
