Central Texas is often called “Flash Flood Alley” because of the frequent, intense storms that turn slow flowing streams into raging rivers that overflow low-lying roadways. The “big ones” seem to happen every decade. Major floods of Austin below have caused major property damage and loss of life; mainly due to drivers trying to cross through the swift water.
The City of Austin, in partnership with the National Weather Service, the Texas Floodplain Management Association and the U.S. Geological Survey, sponsor the Flood Awareness Week Kickoff which features swift water rescue demonstrations and announces the winners of the school poster contest.
Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr announced the Turn Around – Don’t Drown poster contest winners, selected from more than 700 contest entries aged 6 to 13.
The aim of the event is to educate people about the dangers of driving into flooded roadways. Here are some photos from the recent event.
